Robert Shiels was born at Coulter by Biggar near Edinburgh, Scotland, and came to Canada in March 1904. He worked on farms in southwest Manitoba from 1904 to 1906 and in the spring of 1906 he came to Lumsden where he married Isabella Glen in 1907. This is the site of the homestead they farmed until 1947 when they retired to Nanaimo, British Columbia. Robert and Isabella raised four children:

Agnes, married David McConochie, moved to Victoria, BC, where they adopted one daughter, Michelle, in 1960.

William Hunter Shiels, took over the farming from his parents until his death in 1992 - his ashes are buried in the poppy field behind the buildings.

Stuart, a decorated World War II veteran died in the early 1970's.

Isabel, married Herman Schraeder, moved to northern B.C. and raised five children, Murray, Elaine, Ross, Delores and Wesley.
